What’s your understanding of tapering?
Tapering means to reduce gradually. This means that before the race, usually around 7 days (depending on the race you are setting out to do), you start to reduce your training in order to ensure your body is well-rested for race day! You have breakfast, lunch and dinner balanced and correct but are you falling down with your snacks? We tend to focus on main meals when we are trying to manage our nutrition and then in between we are having soft drinks, a quick bar of chocolate or a packet of crisps.
A big event can take a lot out of you. Mentally and physically grueling, long endurance events test you to the limit. Being physically fit and mentally ready are essential but what can you do to help your body recover in the hours and days after you’ve given it all you’ve got?
As part of a two-year project, a group led by Jamie Young, and with the great support of Gaelforce & Killary Adventure Co, will be filming a documentary about Greenland and the wider Arctic. Jamie is one of the original founders of Gaelforce and was instrumental in bringing one day adventure racing in the form of the original Gaelforce 6 and Gaelforce 12 (now Gaelfore West) to Ireland. He has been a trailblazer in the outdoor adventure field since the 1970's. His favourite motto "Stand still and you are history."
