Every Gaelforce event centres around a vibrant community united by a shared passion for adventure and the outdoors.
This year, we embrace the ethos: 'Together We Thrive.'
This is not a mere slogan; it comes from us realising that is who we are and what we do. Adventure isn’t just about rugged landscapes and physical challenges; it’s about the accomplishment achieved when people come together to push their limits.
Great things happen when you challenge yourself. Stepping outside your comfort zone might feel daunting at first, but it’s often the first step toward discovering strengths you never knew you had.
Mona's Story: A Humble Beginning
Nearly 20 years ago, our race director Mona Purcell took on her first adventure race: A two-day, multi-discipline coast-to-coast event in Devon. Rumour has it her boss, Jamie Young, dared her to join and she said yes (who would argue with their boss?).
Arriving in a tracksuit with a borrowed bike, she found herself among Lycra-clad men armed with bananas and gels taped to their handlebars. Her backpack? A humble sandwich. "To say I felt out of place would be an understatement" - Mona
When the race started, Jamie disappeared into the distance, leaving her to face two of her life's hardest, most gruelling days. But those days were also some of the best. Along the way, she connected with complete strangers who helped her tackle punctures, wrong turns, and other hardships. Crossing the finish line two days later with her newfound "tribe" was an experience unlike any other!
Inspired by that race, Mona returned to Ireland determined to bring adventure racing to life here. And so, Gaelforce Events was born.
This is what "Together We Thrive" is all about.
Shane’s Perspective: The Power of People
Our Safety Director, Shane Young, began his adventure racing journey in his early 20s. He’s since embarked on expeditions across the globe, from the Amazon to Argentina, as well as local challenges like cycling from Mizen Head to Malin Head.
One lesson stands out: as an individual, it is harder to complete these trials. As he puts it, "It's the people you are with and we meet along the way that make these adventures worth doing".
In 2013, while sailing to Greenland for a kayaking and climbing expedition, the team faced three storms with 60-knot winds. Days were spent huddled together in chaos, but the group's good humour and collective drive helped them push forward. "Embrace the chance to go places you might never go, with people you might never meet and the things you will learn." - Shane
Encouragement for First-Timers
We understand that signing up for your first adventure race can feel intimidating. But you’re not alone and many participants are first-timers, just like you.Adventure racing isn’t about being the fastest or the strongest. It’s about pushing yourself, connecting with others, and discovering what you’re truly capable of. Along the way, you’ll find camaraderie, encouragement, and support from others who share your journey.
Unity in Diversity:
What sets Gaelforce events apart is the incredible diversity of participants they attract. From seasoned athletes to first-timers, and from all walks of life, people come together to take on the challenge. This mix of backgrounds, skill levels, and ages creates a unique sense of camaraderie, proving that the journey is just as rewarding as the achievement of crossing a finish line.
Carrying the momentum forward:
Gaelforce Events are more than one-off challenges - they’re experiences that push your limits and bring people together.Friendships are made, obstacles are overcome, and every moment reflects the strength of teamwork and determination. "Together we thrive" means embracing the outdoors, challenging yourself, and celebrating every achievement with a supportive community. It’s about taking on the wild, building connections, and creating unforgettable memories.
