Ready for a proper paddling buzz? Ireland’s newest kayak marathon race is landing as part of the Gaelforce Great River Festival on the 16 May 2026 - a fast-flowing, portage-filled 22km challenge that starts on the Royal Canal (https://maps.app.goo.gl/GBVGkdky6fjUcEzc6) and finishes in Lanesborough River Side, with a festival atmosphere waiting right at the finish line.
This one is made for paddlers who love a bit of pace and pressure. Designed for K1 and K2 racing, it’s a point-to-point-style test with quick transitions, tight lines through the locks, and a big final push once you hit the Shannon. You’ll have changing facilities at the finish, plus food and drink on offer after you cross the line... because you’ll have earned it.
The course

The race starts at Lock 43 on the Royal Canal, beside St Patrick’s Catholic Church in Aghnaskea. Competitors park in Lanesborough and will be shuttled out to the start with their kayaks (nice and simple).
The course opens with a short 2km down-and-back to spread things out - you’ll paddle from Lock 43 to a turning buoy 1km south of the start, then back to Lock 43 and straight into the first portage. From there, it’s a smooth rhythm of locks and portages as you make your way towards Cloondara and the river.
After the final lock, you enter the River Shannon roughly 200m later near Termonbarry. Turn left and head downriver to Lanesborough - 12km to go and the finish line is calling.
Once you come under the bridge in Lanesborough you’ve got 500m left and then you’re into a proper grandstand finish, with the Gaelforce Great River Festival happening on the riverbank as you come home.
Boat Requirements
Recommended: K1 and K2 racing kayaks
Allowed but not ideal: Surf Skis
Not allowed: sea kayaks, sit-on-tops, plastic recreational boats
To make it even more exciting, each kayaker will be equipped with a tracker, so family and friends can follow along live as you race to the finish (subject to final confirmation).
