Long summer days, gentle breezes and the feeling of sun on your skin make it easy to motivate yourself to get outside and be active. But with evenings starting to close in and a drop in the temperature, it gets that little bit harder. Here are a few of our favourite tips to keep your training on track through the autumn months.

1. Embrace the weather

Autumn can be a beautiful time of year when nature brings a different beauty to the landscape and the mornings are crisp. Perfect for morning running! We often get our best weather this time of year so make the most of it. And if you’re a swimmer, water temperatures are at their best in autumn.

2. Get your gear right

It may be a little cooler so layer up if needed. It is also vital to be seen as the evenings close in so ensure you have some high visibility gear and maybe invest in some good lights - head torches or lights for the bike. A good wetsuit can extend the swimming season well into autumn too.

3. Use the gym and the pool

The gym and the swimming pool are ideal locations to mix up your training plans on dark evenings so get down to your local gym and pool. The pool is also an ideal way to exercise when your limbs need a rest.

4. Be ever ready

As days get busier again, and you are struggling with time management, it’s a good idea to keep your training gear in the boot of your car or somewhere else convenient. A lunchtime run can be squeezed in, or maybe a quick trip to the gym or pool while you wait for traffic to ease. If you are dropping children to activities, then this could be your golden hour. Be ready!!

5. Sign up for a class

Lots of classes start up again in September after their summer break. Yoga or pilates are great to try over the cooler autumn and winter months. There are plenty of classes out there to suit everyone.

6. Get a training buddy

If you have to meet someone to exercise, there is less chance you will pull out. A training buddy can keep you motivated on the days you just don't want to leave the house.

7. Set a goal for your season

It is always good to have something to work towards to keep you focused and keep your training and fitness on track. Sign up for an event – maybe a Christmas or New Year swim or run or an early spring 10K. Have a look at our event calendar to find your next event.
