Preparing for an adventure race can seem daunting. But there’s no need to fear Gaelforce West. Get yourself in the zone with these simple tips to help you along the way. Now dust off that doubt!

DO THE TRAINING

You don’t have to be a top athlete to compete in Gaelforce West but you do need to train and prepare. Set your goals, stick to your training plan and get out there in all weathers, on all terrains. There’s no other way! But do what you must. If you miss a training day just get back out again the next! Don't beat yourself up.

TRAIN WITH YOUR NUTRITION & GET YOUR DIET RIGHT

Incorporate a good diet well in advance. Don’t make changes to your diet close to your event! Stick to simple meals and what you know. Keep hydrated and avoid alcohol in the days before the race. Plan your race day breakfast and race nutrition. Test out snack options well in advance, and if you are planning to use gels or electrolytes during the race, make sure they suit you and don’t upset your stomach.

PREPARE MENTALLY

Stay positive and tell yourself you can do this. 68km may seem like a huge challenge but if you break it down into smaller segments, it becomes very achievable. Talk to someone who has already completed Gaelforce West or a similar race and see what you need to put in physically and mentally.

BE REALISTIC IN YOUR PLANS

Gaelforce West usually takes around 6.5 hours to complete. Some might make it in 4 hours, for some people it will be 8 hours. Having an idea how long it will take to finish the event will help you plan your race pace and strategy. But don't be afraid to slow down if you need to or get off the bike and walk for a bit - you will still get there in the end.

TAPER YOUR TRAINING

You’ll need to start tapering your training 14 days before event day. Create a tapering plan for yourself and stick to it. A general rule of thumb is to reduce your training by about 25%, gradually reducing intensity and duration as you get closer to race day. Read more about tapering in How to taper for Gaelforce West.

GET YOUR GEAR READY WELL IN ADVANCE

Your bike is your best friend for Gaelforce West and will be the making or breaking of your event. Make sure you are familiar with the bike you’ll use – race day is probably not the day to try out a brand new bike. Don’t leave it until the evening before to fix up your bike, you are just leaving yourself open to a sleepless night! And don't forget a few spare bike tubes!

Prepare all your gear in advance so that there is no stress in the build-up to the race, making sure you have everything you need for the different sections of the course including mandatory kit and all your running and cycling gear. Check the weather and plan accordingly.

DON'T FEAR THE KAYAK SECTION

The kayak section can often be the most enjoyable part of the race. Use it as a chance to rest your legs and paddle calmly. If you have never been in a kayak before it might be a good idea to give it a go beforehand. For anyone not comfortable on water there is plenty of safety cover and you will be wearing a buoyancy aid, so there is no need to worry.

STAY WELL INFORMED

Knowledge is power! Look at a map and study the terrain. Make sure you know the details of your race by reading your Event Guide pdf – everything you need to know is in here! You can also check event information on our website,  follow us on Facebook and Instagram and we’ll email you updates before the event. And you can email us with any queries or for advice on your preparations.

ENJOY YOURSELF!

Chat with your fellow competitors. Many will be first-timers, some will be experienced folk who have been at every event. The beauty of these adventure races is that you get to spend time with others along the way, cursing your decisions or laughing at yourself, but all the while getting closer to that glorious finish line. And believe us it is an amazing feeling.
