As event day approaches, get yourself in the zone with these simple tips to help you along the way.

Do the training

Focus on your training goals, stick to your plan and keep going. In case we haven’t said it enough, it’s really important to train both in the pool and in open water! There’s no substitute for getting out there to get you prepared for anything race day might throw at you. Do what you must. If you miss a training day, just get back out again the next! Don't beat yourself up.

Train with your nutrition and get your diet right

Try to eat the healthiest version of your own diet and focus on whole foods and high-quality carbohydrates. Don’t make changes to your diet close to your event! Stick to simple meals and what you know. Keep hydrated and avoid alcohol in the days before the race. Have a tried and tested breakfast ready to go so you have one less thing to think about.

Prepare mentally

Stay positive and tell yourself you can do this. It may seem like a huge challenge but if you break it down into smaller segments, it becomes very achievable. Talk to someone who has already completed a similar race and see what you need to put in physically and mentally. It is really important to try to overcome any fears or concerns before the event. This is best achieved by getting lots of practice at swimming in open water.

Be realistic in your plans

Having an idea how long it will take to finish the event will help you plan your race pace and strategy. However, weather conditions on the day can sometimes have other ideas so be prepared to be flexible - don't be afraid to slow down if you need to for a bit - you will still get there in the end.

Train in your event gear

Get used to swimming in your wetsuit – make sure it’s comfortable, fits well and doesn’t restrict your movement in the water. Practice swimming with a tow float. These can take a little bit of time to get used if you haven’t used one before, but you won’t even notice you are wearing one come event day.

Stay well informed

Knowledge is power! Look at a map/images of the area or even visit if you can. Make sure you know the details of your race by reading your Event Guide pdf – everything you need to know is in here! You can check event information on our website, follow us on Facebook and Instagram and we’ll email you updates before the event. And you can email us with any queries or for advice on your preparations.

Get everything ready & arrive on time

Prepare all your gear in advance so that there is no stress in the build-up to the race. Check the weather and make sure you have everything you need with you the night before. On event day, give yourself plenty of time to arrive and make it to the start line to warm up.

Enjoy yourself!

Whoo-hoo, it’s event day! You’ve done all the hard work so this is your moment. Chat with your fellow competitors. Many will be first timers, some will be experienced folk who have been at every event. And then it is time to go. Focus on your race and have a good one!
