Signed up for a mud run? Taking on Turf Warrior? Wondering what you’ve let yourself in for? Check out our obstacle and mud running tips and make sure you are well prepared to rock your event :)
1. Get the gear right
This is probably the most important tip of all. Having the right gear will give you comfort throughout your event. We really, really recommend that you wear a wetsuit! Wearing a wetsuit will make the event more enjoyable. This depends on the time of year of course, but as Turf Warrior takes place in December this year it’s a no-brainer. You can hire a wetsuit from us for Turf Warrior if you don’t have one or don’t want to ruin your brand new one.

If we cannot convince you to wear a wetsuit, as a very basic you should have:
- Running leggings & long sleeve running top - avoid cotton at all costs.
- Good socks - maybe avoid white!
- A hat or buff – to keep you warm & cut down on the amount of muck you will have to wash out!
- Gloves can also be useful for warmth & grip.
Everything will get wet and very muddy, so don’t wear anything new or expensive!
2. Get your hydration right
Proper hydration is vital before any event where you will exert yourself. While training and in the lead up to the event make sure you are drinking at least 2 litres of water per day.
Make sure you are well hydrated on the day before the event and on the morning of the event but avoid drinking water directly before the event, so say for the last hour lay off the liquids!
3. Use Mud Running Techniques
Obstacle running events are usually non-competitive and suitable for all fitness levels. But having some techniques to help you through the rough, wet and muddy sections will prevent slipping and keep you from losing control.
-
When running downhill, shorten your stride and move with faster feet.
-
When running uphill take short steps and stay within your comfortable pace.
-
Use your arms for balance - stick them out if you need to!
4. Use your own strengths
These events will test you on many levels. But being the best and fastest runner is not what it’s all about. As humans we are designed to carry out varying tasks, running, climbing, sliding, grappling, balancing, enduring and problem solving. These strengths vary from person to person so find your own strengths and use them to your advantage!
Keep your cool if you are struggling - just pace down and keep going. You don't have to run the full thing, walking or crawling will get you there too!
5. Leave no one behind

Teamwork is key for extreme obstacles. You are all in this together! Don't be shy in asking your fellow competitors for a hand here, or a leg up there - this is as much about your fellow competitors as about yourself. And return the favour!
Respect your fellow participants - don't push anyone out of your way, be patient, be a team player. Being stuck in the dirt together is a great way to make friends!
6. Embrace the mud

You are going to get dirty!! There is no doubt about it. Let yourself go, dive in and enjoy it. Soak up as much dirt and fun as you possibly can - you won't regret it. You may question your sanity at times throughout the event, but you will feel immensely proud of yourself when you get to that finish line.
7. Keep it safe
Extreme obstacle and mud runs are, well, extreme! Which means you will probably get some bruises and scratches along the way. Don’t take unnecessary risks when training or on the day and always follow the organisers and marshals’ instructions, for your safety and the safety of others.
You’ll also need to be aware of the HSE mud running guidance. We recommend that you read this advice carefully before your event.
8. Try a practice run
Try out a similar adventure obstacle course if you can! Our Turf Challenge course is available to book year-round, which will give you a chance to try out some of the elements you might encounter. And will give you one of the best days out you could possibly dream of, so why not get a gang of friends or family together to give it a go.
9. Get dry & warm
Once you’ve passed that finish line, strip off your wet and dirty clothes as soon as you can. Don't worry too much about removing all the dirt – it’ll come off eventually ? - and get some dry and warm clothes on ASAP. You can then relax, grab a celebratory drink and bathe in the glow of your success.
