Course Profile

Stage 1:

Start line is close to Killary Adventure Centre on a small road to the Glen Valley. After 500 metres right turn onto the Western Way. Follow this trail until it reaches the bottom of the first hill. Boggy underfoot so care should be taken. First ascent staying close to a marked fence.

Stage 2:

First ascent is 324 metres and fence to be kept within 10m of you as you climb. From the top a slow, gentle descent along soft ground. Continue to a left turn at the end of the valley, approximately 2 km from the top of the hill.

Stage 3:

Initial descent before climbing from approximately 244m to 549m. Steep climb on grassy hills which can be slippy when wet. Continue to spot height 556m. Boggy underfoot. Beware visibility can change quite quickly. Performing a U-turn continue along the edge of the valley before a downhill into Leenane.

Stage 4:

Reaching the back of Leenane village and onto a private road, follow this down to the main road. You will encounter a dangerous corner so be aware of traffic. 600m of road before joining the rough Western Way track. Continue until you reach the arrow pointing you up the last hill.

Stage 5:

CUT OFF POINT: You must reach this point before 13:00 to be allowed to ascend the mountain. Those that don't must follow a short route home.

Stay within 10m of markers on this hill as this is the safest route. Continue to the summit cairn at 618m. Descent is tricky underfoot so be aware of conditions and your skill level in descending.  You are aiming for the Western Way and the path returning you to the finish line at Killary Adventure Centre.

22km and 1372m of ascent completed

THE 12KM INTRODUCTORY MOUNTAIN RUN

Stage 1:

Start line is close to Killary Adventure Centre on a small road to the Glen Valley. After 500 metres right turn onto the Western Way. Follow this trail until it reaches the bottom of the first hill. Boggy underfoot so care should be taken.

Stage 2:

First hill is 324m and you must keep the fence to your left and within 10m. Once you reach the top there is a gentle descent across the soft ground.

Here is where you leave the other runners behind as you go down the hill.  Ground is usually soft with slippery conditions underfoot.  As you get closer to the bottom you will start to follow a river, reaching the forest road.

Continue along to the river crossing where, depending on the amount of water, you might have to use the bridge.

Next take the bog road to meet the sealed road then finally running 500m on the main road to finish at Killary Adventure Centre.
