The Sprint Course

The course will start and finish at the same points as the longer course. The main differences are that the cycle is shorter, the kayak section is shorter and that you only have to go to the shoulder of Mount Errigal rather than to the summit.

See the maps below for the route outline.

To enter the new sprint course, tick the Gaelforce North box as normal and choose the sprint course after you have entered your personal details. This will also bring the cost down to the correct amount.

Stage 1: Trail and Road Run
You will get mucky and wet on the trail run. This is downhill and flat. The route starts at the southwest end of the spectacular Glenveagh Valley where you will run down on a narrow path through the Bridle Pass, passing through the grounds of Glenveagh Castle and heading to your bike transition in the car park. This is a remarkable run through the valley and past Lough Veagh. Watch out for the Golden Eagles!

Stage 2: Cycling

You will collect your bike in Glenveagh National Park. Always obey rules of the road. Cycling on sealed tarmac roads you will get to enjoy the superb scenery of Glenveagh National Park. As you cycle alongside the Derryveagh Mountains, you will see the mighty Errigal Mountain ahead of you. Keep the fluids going down and the energy levels high.

Stage 3: Mountain Run/Hike and cycle

This is up to the shoulder (approximately half way up) of Mount Errigal and back down. At the transition you will lay down your bike with our crew and there will be water available. The views from Errigal are spectacular and the climb will be challenging as you negotiate your way along the narrow path to the shoulder. You will cover different terrains on route, including bog nearer the base and scree.
You must reach the base of Errigal by 3pm otherwise you will not be allowed to climb it.

Stage 4: Kayaking Dunlewy Lough

You will grab your bike at the bottom of Errigal and cycle the short distance to Dunlewy Lake. At the kayak transition you will be timed out and you will be issued with a paddle, a buoyancy aid, a boat and a companion to paddle with! The boats here are tandem “sit-on-top” kayaks – user friendly by design. You might be a strong paddler or a weak one; the safety cover out on the water is thorough. You will paddle a loop course on the lake.

Elites: If you entered the elite category, you will NOT be timed out for the kayak section. So as soon as you reach the kayak section grab your buoyancy aid, paddle and partner and get going!
Your feet will get wet unless you are very very careful!!

Stage 5: Cycling & final run
Then it’s back on the bikes. Just when you thought your legs were going to give up, you have the 18km to cycle back to Inishcoole Beach at Bunbeg. This last stretch is a mix of on/off road cycle - approximately 6km off road. The off road section is on parts of Coillte forest tracks. The race ends with a short run along the dunes to the finish line at the beach.
