BAD WEATHER COURSE
22KM BAD WEATHER ROUTE
If the weather is forecast to be unsuitable for the 22km Expert route (this may be due not only to weather but temperature, conditions underfoot, etc) then this route will be changed. Competitors will complete the 13km Intermediate route twice with a total distance of approx. 24km/1400m.
22KM SEVERE WEATHER ROUTE
This route will be used if the weather is forecast to be severe during the race.
This route is only roughly drawn on the above map to show the route! Competitors must follow the race signs on race day for the route. The organisers retain the right to alter the race route at any time.
COURSE DESCRIPTION FOR SEVERE WEATHER COURSE
Competitors will be bused to the starting point close to Maaum village in the Maaum valley.
Competitors will start with an ascent of the Mamean pass which brings stunning views as it takes you between two of the Maaumturk Mountains and down into the Lough Inagh valley. Flanked by the Maaumturk Mountains on your right and the Twelve Bens Mountain range on your left the route follows a 'bohereen' (small country lane) for approx 4.5km.
The route joins the Western Way walking route before changing to a rough mountain track leading you along the base of the Maaumturks before ascending to the summit of a hill overlooking the Killary Fjord. After descending from this hill you will re-join the Western Way and forestry trails leading you back to the finish line located at Killary Adventure Centre.
**Please make sure you are aware of the Mandatory Kit List which is extremely important for all distances of the Mountain Run.
THE 13KM BAD WEATHER ROUTE
If the weather is forecast to be severe during the race this course will change to follow the same route as the 12km Introductory route. Please refer to the 12km Introductory Profile.
THE 12KM INTRODUCTORY BAD WEATHER ROUTE
This route will not change and will run during most weather eventualities.
